Girls’ soccer: Competitive sisters provide Windham spark

Stella and Marley Jarvais look to lead the Windham girls on another deep playoff run.

Right now, Windham sisters Stella and Marley Jarvais are probably competing at something.

“Short answer, there’s a little competition,” said Kregg Jarvais, their father. “They push each other pretty hard.”

When the sisters were little, trips to Hannaford included frenzied races to the door. Family board games became an excuse to beat each other up. Now that they’re teenagers, Stella and Marley will regularly play one-on-one soccer against each other, 10 games in a row to reach a definitive winner.

“Then we go home and brag to our parents about it,” Marley said during a break at Falmouth’s preseason play day. “Actually, before this (interview) we were kind of bickering with each other, and arguing about who’s better at what… It’s always good being competitive with each other at home, because then we take it on the field and we work well together.”

The Jarvais sisters are at their best when they redirect that competitive fire toward Windham’s soccer opponents. The two are a big reason why the Eagles are a contender in always-tough SMAA.

Soccer: Scarborough girls get bounce-back win over Windham Red Storm shake off Falmouth defeat with an inspirational 2-1 victory over undefeated Eagles.

    October 10, 2024

Forty-eight hours after a stunning setback, Scarborough’s girls’ soccer team reminded everyone why they’re the reigning champions when they hosted the undefeated Windham Eagles in a highly-anticipated late-season showdown at the Kippy Mitchell Sports Complex.

Make that the no longer unbeaten Windham Eagles.

The Red Storm, who lost at Falmouth Wednesday on a goal with less than a second left on the clock, came out sizzling, but it was the Eagles striking first, as junior Marley Jarvais buried a shot in the 13th minute.

But Scarborough would close the first half strong, as promising freshman Josie Duncan buried a free kick with 12 minutes left to tie it, then with 2:27 to go, junior Paige Garlock benefited from a fortuitous bounce to score to put the Red Storm in front.

Girls’ soccer: Windham slips past rival Gorham, 4-3

The Eagles get their first win over Gorham since the 2021 playoffs.

Each of Windham’s first three goals were on long shots. Kyla Harvie gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead with 34:27 left in the second half, and Marley Jarvais’ goal three minutes later pushed the lead to 3-1. The long shots were by design, Lebel said.

“We knew we had to come out and shoot, and shoot a lot. We’ve had trouble with that. Our game plan was just put it on net and clean it up if we need to,” Lebel said. “We’ve got the players who can shoot from outside, and I’m glad they took them tonight.”

Gorham had success off corner kicks, scoring twice. Julia Reed’s header off a Piper Forgues corner with 8:59 left in the first half knotted the score at 1-1. In the second half, Ashley Connolly’s header off a Forgues corner cut Windham’s lead to 4-3 with 22:38 remaining, capping a flurry in which the teams combined for four goals in just under 10 minutes of play.

Girls’ soccer: 10 teams to watch in southern Maine

    September 3, 2024

Windham: The Eagles lost just two seniors and one starter from the team that ended the season on penalty kicks to Gorham in the regional semifinals. Leading the way is senior Stella Jarvais, a two-time Varsity Maine all-state player. A versatile player, she can play either center midfield, where she scored seven goals and added three assists last season, or drop back to anchor the Eagles’ defense. Midfielder Kyla Harvie led Windham with 12 goals last season, and she has the speed and skill to score more this season. Marley Jarvais scored 11 goals as a sophomore last season and is another explosive scoring option for Windham. Tayla Pelletier is a returning all-conference player on defense.

Falmouth girls fall just short against Windham

Navigators can't rally from 10 points down and drop a 38-30 decision.

... Forty-six seconds in, the Eagles snapped an 8 minute, 17 second drought as Stella Jarvais set up Caiazzo for a layup.

Stella Jarvais then tied the score with a layup, but senior Kate Barter put the Navigators back in front with a free throw, then Meader banked home a shot with 6:17 remaining for an 18-15 lead.

But the rest of the quarter was all Windham, as Christman was sidelined with her third foul 15 seconds later.

After Stella Jarvais made two free throws, Marley Jarvais tied the score with a foul shot, then with 2:34 to go, Stella Jarvais sank two free throws to put the Eagles ahead to stay.

Late in the quarter, Stella Jarvais set up senior Mallory Muse for a layup, Caiazzo set up Stella Jarvais for a layup and Duarte added a layup for a 26-18 advantage.

“We could do a lot more with (Christman) off the floor,” said Windham coach Brody Artes. “We could focus more on the perimeter game defensively, as opposed to the inside-out. It was big for us to attack her and get her in foul trouble.”

Girls’ soccer: Windham scores twice in second half to beat Falmouth, advance to Class A South semis The Eagles scored twice in the second half to avenge a regular season loss to the Navigators with a 2-0 win.

    October 24, 2023

WINDHAM — Five weeks in a high school soccer season might as well be five years. The Windham girls’ soccer team knew it was a better team now in late October than it was when it lost to Falmouth on Sept. 18, and on Tuesday night in the Class A South quarterfinals, the Eagles proved it.

Windham scored a pair of second-half goals and took a 2-0 victory over the Navigators, who earned a 3-1 regular season win the last time these teams played. No. 3 Windham (11-3-1) will face No. 2 Gorham (12-1-2) in the regional semifinals, while No. 6 Falmouth ends the season at 10-4-2.

Windham has won eight of its last nine games after opening the season 3-3.

Windham Coach Deb Lebel said her team had to improve things at both ends of the field from the last time it played Falmouth.

“We needed more pressure up front to score. We needed to stay a little more patient defensively. Contain and help each other, and I think that made all the difference,” Lebel said.

Sophomore forward Marley Jarvais broke the scoreless tie early in the second half, with 33:41 to play. Jarvais took a pass from the middle of the field from Kyla Harvie and fired a shot from 20 yards out and to the left of the net. Jarvais’ shot found the right corner to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Windham rallies for wild win over Thornton Academy

Girls soccer: The Eagles get four goals in the second half to escape with a 5-3 victory.

Windham erupted for four goals in the second half, including the go-ahead tally by Kyla Harvie, to rally for a 5-3 win over Thornton Academy in a Class A South girls’ soccer match Wednesday night in Windham.

Thornton (9-3-1) led 2-1 at halftime after goals by Kayleigh Corriveau and Quincy Thibault.

Marley Jarvais tied it early in the second half with her second goal of the game, then set up a goal by Stella Jarvais that gave Windham (10-3) a 3-2 edge. Charlotte Belanger answered for Thornton, but Harvie broke the tie, and Mackenzie Delewski added an insurance goal.

Windham keeper Ale Hidell made seven saves. Thornton’s Ava Lomax finished with 22 saves.
